@m1tz33 is in Belgrade for the Share Conference 2011

“Please Don’t Feed the Artist”

Is a cute piece, funny and entertaining, and simultaneously makes social commentary on activism and technology. People really enjoy this piece, and so far its going over quite well. Emma and I modified our Ten Tiny Dances piece to fit this venue…

To get  a sense of it: ‘Mitzee’ is at the conference to learn how to hack and become a social media activist.  She is a dancing panda – behind bars in a confined corner - and there is a sign nearby explaining that Mitzee was brought from the Beijing National Theater.  She is at the conference as part of an international touring show organized by generous philanthropists who wanted to help save the pandas so they are teaching her how to use technology.  Mitzee is becoming the mascot of SHARE – she has a twitter account: @m1tz33 and is blogging and updating it throughout the conference. She also uses email and other digital communications. People interact with her, take photos, watch her go about her work, use gadgets and rehearse for the touring show.

"Body part: hair"

The project I’m working on for the month is called Converse with Me. January will be a research phase. Every day I will be listening, talking, and moving with one part of a body and we will see what comes in these conversations. I will start with my body and move on to others as necessary. In March, as part of Nebunele Theatre I will be creating a version of Converse with Me as a Theatrepoem. Performances are April 2nd, at 7 and 9pm at Seattle Center.

National Choreography Month, and the NACHMO Challenge, is the inspiration of Anna Brown Massey. The challenge is grounded in contributing consistently to a community of dance artists doing the everyday creative groundwork of choreography.

Seattle performance artist Emma Klein to dance and teach at the Al Rowwad Theater and Freedom Theater in the West Bank, Palestine December 29, 2010 through January 15, 2011.

Seattle, WA/USA – December 10, 2010

The Al Rowwad Theater, based in the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, and the Freedom Theater, based in the Jenin Refugee Camp in Jenin, have invited Seattle’s Emma Klein, Assistant Director of Stimulate Dance, to work with students and faculty on movement development, improvisation, and choreography. The Al Rowwad Theater, founded in 1998, uses art as a means for free self-expression and peaceful engagement to distance Palestinian youth and adults from the heavy atmosphere of war and violence surrounding them. The Jenin Freedom Theater, founded in 2002, uses art as a model for social change and provides the only professional venue for theater and art in northern West Bank.

Invitations are extended through the American Jews for Just Peace – Health and Human Rights Project delegation to Palestine and Israel. This will be Klein’s second consecutive residency, made possible by support from donations.

Emma Klein is Assistant Director and co-founder of Stimulate Dance. Klein also works as a performance artist and choreographer. Klein was the 2009 dance intern at the Mission Creek Correctional Center with Pat Graney’s Keeping the Faith Project and has taught dance to students of all ages in Seattle, Boston, Eritrea, and Palestine.

Stimulate Dance is a dance theater company based in Seattle, WA. Since 2007 the company has produced original shows in Seattle, Portland, Palestine, and South Korea on the principles of audience-friendly performance and sustainable art. Stimulate Dance is a recipient of a 2010 ArtSparks grant as well as a 2010 4Culture Group Art Projects grant for their Open Air Performance Series.
